I just opened the message below.  At a loss as to what to do...  It came from '
munanoor@omantel.net.om' and had a 40 kb attachment which I did not open.

You don't have to do anything. Just delete it. It's not from Apple and your account almost certainly was not used to send spam (though your _address_ might have been spoofed on spam sent from bot-infested Winwonk computers. It's just a ruse to try to get you to open the attachment which, in all likelihood would do nothing if you're using a Mac.
