Does anyone know what the going rate for proofreading is? I've been asked to p/r a 50-page academic dissertation and I'd like to give her a bit of a discount, but first I need to know the going rate per A4 sheet, double-spaced.

In the past, it was 5000 per page, but I haven't done any for a while. However, I know someone I can ask.....

You need to read it in its entirety and try correcting a few pages before quoting. It depends entirely on how much correcting is needed. If you have to rewrite almost every sentence, then translation rates like 3,000 - 5,000 yen per page are necessary, which makes it too expensive.

On the other hand, if you have to rewrite 2-4 sentences a page, correct a few spelling mistakes, change the font and add an "a" or "the" here and there, then 500 yen per page "mates rates."

No big surprise, but I'd say Colin is "right on the money" here -- as usual.

Yes, you need to read the whole thing and also then actually do a few pages to get a real feel for it.  At least for me, just flipping through the pages is not enough to tell me how much time/effort will really be required.

Good luck!

JD>> Thanks Colin >> this was useful. We have come to a mutually acceptable arrangement as a result.
