Hello,

Some time ago, there was a comment on the board about Region Free DVD Players sold at Costco.

I've not been there in a long time, but I'm wondering if anyone has ever bought one? Did it work well?
If it existed, I presume it was made in China — not that it matters.

Thanks.

In the past I bought and used region free Costco DVD players. My most recent visits did not have DVD players labeled Region Free. Colin has provided in the past a web site which instructs on making DVD players region free. http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks/

In many units the code can be accessed and adjusted. I recently purchased a portable system to use in my classes. I bought it on Amazon Japan, by searching in Japanese for region free players, of which there are several at very affordable prices. The prices at Amazon Japan are competitive to Costco and assured to include instructions to adjust the appropriate codes for your needs.

Dear Robert,

Thank you for taking time to answer. I'll take it from there.

I wonder, since I see your name, where your children are and what they are doing? You used to refer to them in your postings.

Sincerely,
David

Thanks for asking about my children. As it turns out they are both home for the summer. My daughter, Kai 19, is studying in the USA and my son does a homestay during the week while studying in Suma at Marist International School, Zen is 17. We are presently taking many trips to the Shiga public dump transitioning from a childhood home to a place for three adults. Trouble is the dump doesn't take medal, so all those old computers et al. will cost money to get rid of. Clothes are going to the Philippines, not cheap to ship, yet more gratifying then the dump. I love having my kids home, though the thought of the next 4+ years with them in college is financially overwhelming... perhaps you've been through all this already.

I have bought three. The first two were LG units (a Korean company) and worked fine until one suddenly stopped. I went back in 2008 and those were no longer available. However, I specifically asked a staffer and he  pointed me to a Philips model that was the only region-free unit in the store -- and it was smaller and cheaper than the LGs. It's fine. In other words, you have to ask.

Thanks, Norm.  You always come to the rescue.  I'll be asking for a Phillips region free dvd player  whenever I get around to going to  Costco. I'll let you know the results.  Thanks again, David

Hi David,

As the others have noted here, I've had good luck with the region-free players from Costco.  The only thing is playing the usual "Costco lottery" (i.e., what will they have in stock on the day that I'm there?).

About 6 months ago, I was in need of a new region-free player and Costco didn't have any in stock at that moment.   I tried Amazon and ordered one of the many found by doing a search for region-free players, but it turned out not to be the case (and not adjustable with some setting or tinkering of my own).  That's just my own experience.

Good luck!
